The Global Gazetteer: Points of interest |
Some 400,000 other points of interest, including railway stations, farms, mosques, resorts, etc, geocoded and linked to their places. The data fields are primarily the same as for Towns and Airports.
|
|
The Global Gazetteer: Streets |
Street level postcode and addressing data for many countries. This data is linked through to The Global Gazetteer. We have developed a consistent data structure to handle street-level, PO Box and Large User data from all countries.
|
|
Postcode patterns |
The pattern of alphanumeric and other postcode characters for each country, eg USA: nnnnn or nnnnn-nnnn. There has been a major expansion of postcode data and there are now over 1.65 million places with postcodes on file.
More postcodes are being incorporated into the database, as well as following through the changes to codes in El Salvador, Georgia and the Ukraine. The latter has been especially interesting, since much of the data is currently only available in the Russian transliteration (eg using 'g' instead of the Ukrainian 'h'), so it has required a double conversion to ensure that the old name version is retained as a variant.
|
|
Telephone number patterns |
Official and other commonly used patterns for telephone numbers
(eg USA: (nnn) nnn nnnn, nnn/nnn nnnn, and others where
appropriate).
|
|
Height |
Virtually all records now have heights included. There are either actual heights as supplied by official agencies or major reference books, OR heights derived from the DTOPO30 files. In order to distinguish between the two types, they are kept in separate fields.
|
|
Personal names |
GRC Database Information and ALLM GeoData are jointly working on a comprehensive given names database. Currently, it contains some 700,000 given (“first”) names, together with around 37,000 family names (“surnames”). Information included in this file is contained in the following fields:
| This table has been built through intense analysis of both
real-World data sets and other sources of given- and family name
information. These tables are being continually updated and improved.

slightly finer "World Factbook" locational descriptions. Fields: Code, Meaning, Conventional sort order |

codes for the types of administrative areas, place types, points of interest
codes, etc. Fields: Code, Meaning (eg Gemeinde, County Town), Notes, Country in which used, Category of code Translation of the word in various languages |

name of a place is either the preferred name or is a non-referred name Fields: Code, Meaning (eg English conventional version of name, Minority language version) |
| Time Zones | The reference file of time zone canonical
names Fields: GMT plus/minus, GMT offset, daylight savings time, formal rules for determining the change to and from DST. |
